Centenary Suzuki Institute

Information

The Centenary Suzuki Institute – June 4-7

Registrations will open soon!

The Centenary Suzuki Institute will be a full 4-day program. Several nationally recognized, professional musicians with Suzuki training will work with our students for masterclasses, group classes, and orchestra.

The opportunity to work directly with professional musicians of this caliber working with our students directly, in concert with the private teacher, is invaluable to their musical development. The institute is also a ton of fun, with opportunities for our students and families to celebrate the season musically as a community.

Our Institute is recommended for Suzuki violin, viola and cello students from beginning (not including Pre-Twinklers) to advanced. Each student will have 4-5 hours of classes everyday. All advanced students will additionally be placed in an orchestra. Student will have a variety of activities, including the final concerts, solo recital, master classes, group classes, orchestra, fiddling and/or choir. Chamber Music classes will be available to those also enrolling in the CYO Chamber Music Program.

All classes will take place at Hurley School of Music.

MEALS

For this year, food service is not available on campus. As the Institute grows and we reach a minimum number of students, we plan to partner with the college to use the cafeteria services in the future. You are encouraged to bring your own lunch and you may find places around campus with tables and chairs. You can use the microwave in the kitchen area in Hurley or Anderson Choir building, but please keep the place clean and do not hang in those areas, as they will be used for college faculty and college students.

Within a few minutes from the Institute location there are many food options to suit every taste and budget. If you are from out of town, we gathered a list of local restaurants we recommend.

LODGING

We recommend searching online (Google, Booking.com, and Airbnb) for great deals and convenient locations.

Currently, we have very limited college dorms to offer to students and families. If you are interested, please contact us.

CLASSES

Each student is guaranteed a minimum of four hours of classes daily, which includes a masterclass and a group class. Occasionally, a fifth hour, such as a recital or the final concert, will be included. Due to scheduling challenges, we are not able to allow students to choose their elective classes. We plan to assign a variety of engaging classes tailored to each student’s age and skill level, however schedule breaks are inevitable. Advanced students will participate in orchestra sessions, while younger students may join choir, fiddling, or other art activities.

There will be a Final Concert on Saturday at 4:45 pm. Dress for the concert is Institute T-shirt and casual clothes. Post-concert treats will be available!

SOLO RECITAL

We will have a Solo Recital on Thursday, June 5 at 3:45 PM in Anderson Auditorium. You can sign up for the student recital using the registration form. Or you can email us directly with the information. The sign-up deadline is Wednesday, May 21 or when the recital the recital fills up.

    • Talk to your private teacher first, pick a piece that you’ve mastered. Whether it’s a Twinkle Variation or a Paganini Caprice, what matters most is the level of preparation. Polished review pieces are highly recommended!
    • Performer must have rehearsed with home studio accompanist and be familiar with the piano part. You will have only one extra and quick rehearsal during the Institute.
    • Sheet music must be provided for the accompanist
