JOB LISTING
Cello Suzuki Instructor
Location: Shreveport, LA
Description: The Centenary Suzuki School (CSS) is a thriving program, founded 47 years ago at Centenary College of Louisiana. With approximately 160 students and seven teachers, it offers two semesters of weekly Tuesday group sessions that include repertoire classes, music theory, and three orchestras, in addition to weekly private lessons. During the summer, private lessons are flexible based on each teacher’s availability. CSS hosts numerous concerts throughout the year, including four graduation recitals, several large group concerts, ten solo recitals, two ensemble/orchestra concerts, and an annual Summer Suzuki Institute that features nationally recognized clinicians.
A cello instructor is needed to meet the high demand from students on our long waiting list. We have over 20 students at various levels, ranging from Suzuki Volume 1 through advanced concertos. CSS graduates have been accepted into renowned conservatories such as the Curtis Institute, Juilliard, Oberlin, Cincinnati Conservatory, and Indiana University. Others have continued their studies as non-music majors at top institutions, including Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Stanford, Brown, Rice, Emory, Vanderbilt, and Cornell.
Many performance opportunities are available in the region, including positions with the Shreveport Symphony, Texarkana Symphony, South Arkansas Symphony, Longview Symphony, and Marshall Symphony. There may also be an opportunity for an adjunct faculty position at Centenary College, subject to the College’s consideration.
Duties: Teaching private cello lessons and weekly group classes, attending, and leading concerts, directing small ensembles, and teaching music appreciation classes to children.
Qualifications: Bachelor of Music in Cello with Suzuki training through Unit 3 desirable with the willingness of continuing Suzuki training. The Shreveport Suzuki Parents Association usually helps with the costs of additional training.
Centenary College recognizes that diversity is essential to its goal of providing an educational environment where students explore the unfamiliar, invent new approaches to understanding, and connect their work and lives to the world at large. We thus welcome applicants who would add to the College’s diversity of ideas, beliefs, experiences, and cultural backgrounds.
Salary: $60/hour, starting at $50,000/year. Average workload of 26h/week. Part-Time position without benefits. Payroll is managed through Centenary College and Southfield School.
