Description: The Centenary Suzuki School (CSS) is a thriving program, established 43 years ago at Centenary College of LA, the oldest liberal arts college west of the Mississippi River. With about 150 students and 7 teachers, it offers two semesters of weekly Tuesday group sessions with repertoire classes, theory, and three orchestras in addition to the weekly private lessons. Summer private lessons are flexible depending on number of weeks offered by each teacher. Payroll is through the college. CSS offers numerous concerts yearly: 4 graduation recitals, several large group concerts, 9 solo recitals, 2 mid-semester solo recitals, 2 ensemble/orchestra concerts, and a Bi-Annual weekend workshop which brings in nationally known clinicians in conjunction with Mardi-Gras in Shreveport.
Cello instructor is needed to replace a teacher who is retiring after almost 30 years of service. Cello graduates of CSS have been accepted at Curtis Institute, Juilliard, Oberlin College, and New England Conservatory, as well as cello graduates who continued their studies as non-majors at Baylor University, Columbia University, Rhodes College, Centenary College etc.
In addition, our CSS cello teacher is also retiring from Shreveport Symphony, leaving an opening for a contract “core” position. These core positions do not open frequently and are often held for decades. It will be subject to a competitive audition which will be announced in the near future. The two positions together (if desired) make for a pleasing career of performing and teaching. Shreveport Symphony is an excellent regional orchestra with an outstanding conductor (Michael Butterman), world class guest soloists, drawing many of its principal players from Dallas, Houston, and the surrounding area. Playing opportunities are with other regional symphonies include: Texarkana, South Arkansas, Longview and Marshall Symphonies. (CSS position not contingent on winning SSO position)
